Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope faces four-month layoff after shoulder surgery

Posted : 06 December 2023

Newcastle United and England goalkeeper Nick Pope is set to undergo shoulder surgery following a dislocation during the team's recent victory over Manchester United. The 31-year-old is expected to be sidelined for approximately four months, with manager Eddie Howe expressing hope that Pope might return before the European Championships next summer.

Pope's injury adds to Newcastle's growing list of sidelined players, including Callum Wilson, Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy, Joe Willock, Sven Botman, and Dan Burn. The goalkeeper, who joined Newcastle in June 2022, had been a consistent presence in both Premier League and Champions League matches this season, maintaining five clean sheets.

Despite Pope's setback, Howe dismissed media speculation about potential goalkeeper replacements in the upcoming January transfer window. The manager emphasized that the club has not made any inquiries for new recruits and sees the current situation as an opportunity for other goalkeepers on the team to step up.

Pope's injury has raised concerns about Newcastle's ambitions in both domestic and European competitions, but Howe remains focused on the team's progress. The setback also poses challenges for Pope's aspirations to secure a spot in Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2024, as he aims to make a comeback in time for critical fixtures in the latter part of the season. Pope, capped 10 times by England, is determined to contribute to both Newcastle's campaign and potentially feature in the Euros.
