Victor Wembanyama has received a warning from the NBA after failing to meet with reporters following the San Antonio Spurs defeat to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals.
According to reports, the league informed the Spurs that Wembanyama violated NBA media access regulations after he did not speak to the press following Tuesday’s 127-114 loss, which left San Antonio trailing 3-2 in the series.
A Spurs spokesperson informed reporters roughly an hour after head coach Mitch Johnson completed his postgame duties that Wembanyama would not be available for interviews.
The French star struggled offensively during the game, finishing with 20 points while shooting just 4-for-15 from the field. He also collected only one rebound during the first half, matching the lowest total he has recorded in a playoff half this postseason.
Oklahoma City found consistent success offensively while Wembanyama was on the court, shooting 49 percent from the field against the young center — the highest percentage any opponent has managed against him during these playoffs.
Following the defeat, Johnson acknowledged the Spurs would need stronger performances from their star player in order to avoid elimination in Game 6.
The NBA has previously disciplined players for failing to fulfill postgame media obligations during the playoffs. In 2023, Jimmy Butler and Dillon Brooks were both fined after skipping media interviews following postseason games.
The warning comes shortly after Wembanyama earned the 2025-26 Magic Johnson Award from the Professional Basketball Writers Association. The award recognizes the NBA player who best combines on-court excellence with professionalism and cooperation when dealing with the media and fans.
