NBA support Portland Trail Blazers after Damian Lillard's Miami Heat preference
Posted : 29 July 2023
Following a conversation with Damian Lillard and his agent, Aaron Goodwin, the NBA has taken a firm stance in support of the Portland Trail Blazers.
Lillard had expressed his desire to play exclusively for the Miami Heat, and his agent warned other teams that they would have an unhappy player if they tried to acquire him.
In response, the league issued a letter to all 30 teams, making it clear that Lillard will face consequences if he refuses to play for any team he may be traded to.
The NBA met with Lillard and Goodwin to discuss the situation, and both confirmed that Lillard would fulfill his contractual obligations in any potential trade. Goodwin denied making statements suggesting otherwise to teams.
However, the league emphasized that any statements, whether made privately or publicly, indicating that a player would not honor their contract after a trade would result in disciplinary action for that player.
As the trade negotiations continue, the Miami Heat has not yet presented an offer that satisfies the Blazers. The Blazers' general manager, Joe Cronin, is willing to wait for the best deal for the team, indicating that the saga could extend for some time.
In the midst of this situation, the NBA is standing firmly behind the Trail Blazers' rights and emphasizing that player contracts must be honored, regardless of trade destinations.
