Myles Lewis-Skelly's Three-Match Ban Overturned After Successful Arsenal Appeal

Posted : 28 January 2025

Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly's three-match ban, handed to him after a red card during the Wolves match on Saturday, has been overturned following an appeal by the club. The Football Association confirmed that an independent regulatory commission supported Arsenal's appeal, ruling the red card to be a wrongful dismissal.

The 18-year-old had received a straight red after fouling Matt Doherty, with referee Michael Oliver initially deeming the tackle as serious foul play.

The incident occurred in the 43rd minute when Doherty was just outside the Wolves box attempting a counter-attack. The decision was reviewed by VAR, with Darren England confirming the red card. Despite this, the appeal process led to the overturning of the decision, acknowledging that the tackle did not warrant a sending-off.

The match continued with Wolves eventually having a player sent off themselves, following Joao Gomes' second yellow card, before Arsenal secured a 1-0 victory with a goal by Riccardo Calafiori in the 74th minute.

Following the match, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his anger at the decision, describing it as "so obvious" that no further explanation was needed. The incident has led to police investigating threats and abuse aimed at referee Michael Oliver, according to the referees' body PGMOL.

Arteta's frustration was evident as he voiced his displeasure on both BBC Match of the Day and Sky Sports, leaving the matter to be addressed by the relevant authorities.
