Michael Edwards is reportedly engaged in renewed discussions with Liverpool's owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), regarding a potential return to Anfield as the head of the club's football operations, according to sources.
Edwards, acknowledged for transforming Liverpool's recruitment strategy and instrumental in bringing Jurgen Klopp on board in 2015, left his role as sporting director in 2022.
FSG has faced challenges in finding a suitable replacement for Edwards, with Julian Ward and Jorg Schmadtke both lasting less than a year in the role.
FSG is said to envision Edwards leading a new football setup at Anfield, while Bournemouth's technical director, Richard Hughes, is rumored to be lined up for the vacant sporting director position.
Despite offers from Chelsea and Manchester United since leaving Liverpool, Edwards has expressed a preference for a more senior executive role if he returns to football.
Liverpool approached Edwards earlier this year, and while initial talks did not progress, the club has come back with a new offer. Sources indicate that Edwards is intrigued by the opportunity but has not yet made a final decision.
With Klopp set to leave his managerial post at the end of the season, Liverpool faces a crucial summer, and FSG sees Edwards' expertise as crucial in making the right appointment to succeed Klopp, especially with other top clubs like Bayern Munich and Barcelona also in search of new managers.
