Mexico Reverses Plan to Shorten School Year After World Cup Backlash

Posted : 12 May 2026

Mexico has reversed a controversial decision to shorten its school year ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following strong criticism from parents, education experts, and local authorities.

The proposal, initially announced by Education Secretary Mario Delgado, suggested ending the academic year around 40 days early on June 5. Officials cited extreme heat conditions and logistical challenges linked to the upcoming global tournament as reasons for the change.

However, the plan quickly sparked widespread opposition. Parents raised concerns about disruptions to learning, while think tanks warned it could significantly reduce instructional time for millions of students. Several state authorities also rejected the proposal outright.

Following a government meeting attended by education officials and input from President Claudia Sheinbaum, it was decided to abandon the early closure. The school calendar will now remain unchanged, with the academic year set to end on July 15 and classes resuming on August 31.

The World Cup, which Mexico will co-host with the United States and Canada, is scheduled to begin on June 11, with Mexico playing its opening match in Mexico City.

Sheinbaum had earlier stressed the need for consensus, stating that any changes must consider both educational needs and public opinion. Authorities have now confirmed that the traditional six-week summer break will be maintained.

Education policy group Mexico Evalua previously warned that the proposed cut could negatively affect over 23 million students by reducing learning time. Critics also argued that adjusting the national academic calendar for a sporting event was unnecessary and disruptive.

The government has also reiterated its commitment to ensuring security and completing infrastructure projects ahead of the World Cup, including upgrades to major stadiums and transport facilities in host cities.
