Lionel Messi is currently experiencing one of his most challenging stretches since joining Major League Soccer, as Inter Miami continues to struggle. The team suffered a heavy 3-0 home defeat to Orlando City, marking only one win in their last seven matches.
Speaking after the game, Messi acknowledged the team’s difficult form, emphasizing the importance of unity in tough times. "Now is when we’ll see if we’re truly a team," he said. "It’s easy when things go well, but we have to be more united than ever when they don’t."
Messi's frustration was palpable, particularly regarding the officiating during the match. He criticized the MLS referees, citing a controversial incident in the first half that led to Orlando’s opening goal. According to Messi, an Orlando defender passed the ball back to the goalkeeper, who then handled it—a move that typically constitutes an infraction.
However, the referee allowed play to continue, and Orlando capitalized almost immediately with a goal. "The referee told me he didn’t know the rule," Messi explained. "These kinds of errors can’t keep happening. MLS needs to review its officiating standards."
Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano also expressed concern over the team’s poor form, admitting that the coaching staff must take responsibility for the recent performances. The loss saw Miami drop to sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings with 21 points, while Orlando City climbed above them into fifth place with 24 points.
Both Messi and Mascherano made it clear that the team must regroup quickly if they are to turn things around in the weeks ahead.
