Media Criticizes Manchester United Ownership Amid Erik ten Hag’s Dismissal

Posted : 29 October 2024

The English media heavily focused on Erik ten Hag’s dismissal from Manchester United, with many outlets scrutinizing the club's ownership rather than solely attributing blame to the Dutch manager. Following United’s fall to 14th place in the Premier League and a fourth defeat in nine games at West Ham, the decision to part ways with Ten Hag brought renewed debate about the leadership choices at Old Trafford. The Times pointed out that United’s troubles began over the summer, hinting that Ten Hag’s authority had waned due to reported discussions with other managerial candidates, despite his team’s FA Cup success against Manchester City.

Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos group, now partial owners of United, initially decided to keep Ten Hag, even rewarding him with a pay raise and contract extension. Yet, The Times argued this decision may have inadvertently undermined his influence, making it harder for him to maintain respect among players when rumors of his potential replacement were circulating. This mixed message from management has fueled ongoing criticism from fans and analysts who view the ownership’s inconsistency as a major factor in the team’s recent struggles.

The BBC raised additional questions regarding the timing of Ten Hag’s dismissal, noting that allowing him to continue through a rough season cost United potential opportunities to recruit managers like Mauricio Pochettino or Thomas Tuchel, who have since taken roles with the USA and England national teams, respectively. The outlet also highlighted the financial repercussions of this decision, estimating Ten Hag’s severance package at around £15 million, which, along with summer transfer spending, places United’s expenses under scrutiny.

Reflecting the sentiment of some fans, The Guardian included a perspective lamenting Ten Hag’s sacking, praising his understanding of the club and his ability to connect with Old Trafford supporters while delivering two domestic trophies. However, contrasting views appeared in the Daily Mail, which offered a harsh critique of United’s current position, suggesting that Ratcliffe’s cost-cutting measures at the administrative level feel incongruous with the high costs associated with Ten Hag’s tenure. The tabloid painted a bleak picture, emphasizing how far United may still have to fall in light of its current financial and managerial turmoil.
