Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe has been hospitalised with an acute case of gastroenteritis, the club confirmed on Thursday. The 26-year-old forward missed the team’s FIFA Club World Cup opener against Al-Hilal, which ended in a 1-1 draw, after sitting out training earlier in the week due to a fever. Mbappe was admitted for a series of medical tests and is currently under observation.
Gastroenteritis, which is an infection that affects the stomach and intestines, typically causes symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea. Real Madrid has not disclosed whether the France captain will be fit for their next Club World Cup fixture against Mexican side Pachuca, scheduled for Sunday at 20:00 BST. His absence is a significant concern as Real continues its tournament run under new manager Xabi Alonso.
Mbappe joined Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season and has already made a strong impact, scoring 43 goals in 56 appearances across all competitions. In his debut season with the Spanish giants, he helped the club lift both the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup. The current campaign marks Real’s first under Alonso’s leadership, following the departure of Carlo Ancelotti.
