Matthew Richardson Brushes Off Criticism Over Switch from Australia to Britain

Posted : 23 August 2024

Matthew Richardson has brushed off criticism regarding his recent decision to switch from representing Australia to Britain, labeling the negative comments as "meaningless words." Richardson, who achieved notable success by winning three medals for Australia at the Paris velodrome, announced his move to the British cycling team on Monday, expressing excitement about pursuing his ambitions with his new team.

The 25-year-old cyclist's decision was met with disappointment from AusCycling and criticism from some former Australian cyclists. However, Richardson remains unfazed by the backlash. In an interview with Eurosport, he dismissed the critics as individuals who likely lack a genuine understanding of the sport, challenging them to define terms like "keirin" without resorting to Google.

Despite the criticism, Richardson has received significant support, including from his cycling club in Perth, which has assured him a warm welcome should he choose to return. He emphasized that the positive support he has garnered outweighs the negativity he has encountered.

Regarding the potential impact of his switch on his competition schedule, Richardson acknowledged that he would miss the upcoming UCI World Championships in Denmark and the European Championships early next year. However, he noted that he was aware of this limitation when he made the switch and is prepared to accept any additional consequences that may arise.
