Mateta’s Late Heroics Expose Newcastle’s Struggles as Palace Complete Dramatic Comeback Win

Posted : 16 April 2026

Crystal Palace produced a dramatic late turnaround at Selhurst Park, beating Newcastle United 2-1 thanks to a decisive double from substitute Jean-Philippe Mateta. The French striker’s impact transformed the match in the closing stages, as Newcastle once again failed to protect a lead in a frustrating Premier League outing.

Newcastle had taken control of the game in the first half when William Osula finished a well-worked move just before the break. However, the visitors were unable to build on their advantage, and their attacking substitutes—Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade among them—failed to make any meaningful contribution after being introduced late in the match.

Mateta, meanwhile, changed the entire rhythm of the contest after coming off the bench. He equalised in the 80th minute with a composed header before sealing victory deep into stoppage time from the penalty spot, completing a comeback that highlighted Palace’s growing confidence under pressure.

The result further underlined Newcastle’s ongoing problems this season, particularly their inability to manage games after going ahead. Despite significant summer investment and squad depth, Eddie Howe’s side again struggled to influence the match in key moments, with their attacking changes failing to shift momentum.

For Crystal Palace, the win reflected resilience and effective game management from Oliver Glasner’s substitutes, as well as Mateta’s continued reputation as a decisive impact player. For Newcastle, it was another missed opportunity that raised fresh questions about consistency and end-game control.
