Marketa Vondrousova Appeals Four-Year Anti-Doping Ban to CAS

Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the four-year suspension imposed on her for refusing an out-of-competition anti-doping test. CAS has confirmed receiving the appeal, although a hearing date has not yet been scheduled.

The Czech player was suspended by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) in June after she failed to provide a sample when a doping control officer attempted to test her at home on 3 December 2025. Her current suspension is scheduled to run until 21 June 2030.

Vondrousova has maintained that she never used banned substances and said she was experiencing severe physical and mental stress when the incident occurred. She also claimed she became concerned for her safety because the officer arrived at her home in the evening and, according to her account, did not properly identify themselves or follow the required procedures.

The 27-year-old eventually signed a refusal form after going outside to walk her dog. Under anti-doping regulations, tennis players must provide their whereabouts for a designated period each day, allowing authorities to conduct unannounced tests outside competition.

An independent tribunal rejected Vondrousova's explanation, concluding that she had not provided a compelling justification for refusing the test. The panel also declined her request for a shorter suspension.

Vondrousova has stressed that she has never failed a doping test. A sample she provided three days after the disputed incident also returned a negative result, although the refusal itself constituted the anti-doping violation for which she was sanctioned.

Vondrousova's Career Interrupted

Vondrousova made history at Wimbledon in 2023 when she became the first unseeded women's singles player to win the tournament. She has also reached a French Open final and won an Olympic silver medal.

The Czech has not competed since the Adelaide International in January and has subsequently fallen to 153rd in the WTA rankings. Her CAS appeal now represents her opportunity to overturn or reduce the suspension and potentially return to competitive tennis before 2030.
