Maradona Death Trial: Seven Medical Professionals Face Negligence Charges

Posted : 07 March 2025

Four years after Diego Maradona’s passing, seven healthcare professionals are set to stand trial next week in Argentina, facing accusations of negligence in his final days. The trial, taking place in San Isidro, Buenos Aires, will last four months and feature testimony from over 100 witnesses, including family members and medical experts.

If convicted, the defendants could face sentences ranging from eight to 25 years in prison. Their alleged failure to provide adequate care to Maradona has sparked widespread scrutiny, reigniting debate over the circumstances surrounding the football legend’s death.

Maradona died on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60 while recovering from brain surgery to remove a blood clot. He was found lifeless in a rented home in Buenos Aires, where he had been staying after his discharge from the hospital two weeks earlier.

A heart attack was determined as the cause of death, though reports emerged that his condition had worsened in the hours leading up to his passing. His death, which occurred amid the Covid-19 pandemic, triggered national mourning in Argentina, with thousands gathering at the presidential palace to pay their final respects.

The medical team facing trial includes neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, psychologist Carlos Diaz, and several other healthcare professionals involved in his treatment. Prosecutors claim they provided inadequate care, leading to Maradona’s prolonged suffering before his death.

A 2021 panel of medical experts concluded that Maradona’s chances of survival would have been significantly higher with proper treatment in a medical facility. The defense, however, argues that each professional acted within their area of expertise, with Cosachov’s lawyer maintaining that she was responsible for his mental health, not his physical condition.

Despite the controversy surrounding his final days, Maradona remains a revered figure in Argentina. His legacy lives on through murals, statues, and an upcoming mausoleum in Buenos Aires, which will allow fans to honor his memory.

The site, expected to attract up to a million visitors annually, reflects the enduring love and admiration he commands. As the trial unfolds, the case continues to evoke strong emotions, ensuring that Maradona’s story remains at the heart of Argentine football history.
