Manchester City Confirm Josko Gvardiol Suffers Broken Leg in Chelsea Draw

Posted : 06 January 2026

Manchester City have confirmed that defender Josko Gvardiol sustained a broken leg during Sunday’s 1–1 draw with Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium. Gvardiol was one of two centre-backs forced off in the second half, alongside Ruben Dias, before Enzo Fernandez’s stoppage-time goal secured a point for the visitors.

The draw leaves City six points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, intensifying the pressure on Pep Guardiola’s side. In a statement issued on Monday, the club revealed that Gvardiol suffered a tibial fracture in his right leg and is scheduled to undergo surgery later this week. The statement added that assessments are ongoing to determine the full extent of the injury and expected recovery timeline.

Before the official diagnosis, Guardiola had expressed concern about both defenders, saying their situations “don’t look good.” The severity of Dias’ injury has not yet been disclosed.

City’s defensive issues are compounded by other absences. John Stones has been sidelined for a month with a thigh problem, while Rayan Ait-Nouri is away with Algeria at the Africa Cup of Nations. Midfielder Nico Gonzalez also missed the Chelsea match, and Guardiola will continue to be without Savinho, Oscar Bobb, Mateo Kovacic, and Omar Marmoush for Wednesday’s home game against Brighton.

Amid the injury setbacks, there was a positive return for City as Rodri made his first start since October, playing the full 90 minutes against Chelsea. The Spain international has faced multiple challenges during his recovery from a serious knee injury, including a recent hamstring problem. Reflecting on his return, Rodri said, “It’s been a terrible, terrible time for me. Everything that comes right now is a gift, every minute that I’ve been on the pitch, it’s a joy for me. Thank you to God for giving me this second opportunity to enjoy my profession and recover my smile.”
