Manager Pep Guardiola has announced that Stefan Ortega, Manchester City's backup goalkeeper, will start the FA Cup final matchup against Manchester United.
Ortega has participated in every round of City's journey to Wembley, and he will start against United in lieu of Ederson, who will start the Champions League final against Inter Milan in Istanbul on June 10 instead. Ortega has played in every round of City's journey to Wembley.
"He is going to play," Guardiola said
"I have always been like that in the FA Cup. At Barcelona and Bayern as well. The goalkeeper who plays in the FA Cup is going to play."
Ortega's insertion in City's lineup gives Guardiola the option to continue using other players who have been inserted into the starting lineup for domestic cup matches.
Aymeric Laporte and Riyad Mahrez have featured in the FA Cup but have often been replacements in the second part of the season in the Premier League and Champions League. In the semifinal win over Sheffield United at Wembley in April, Mahrez notched a hat trick.
