Lionel Messi sparked injury concerns ahead of the World Cup after being substituted during Inter Miami’s Major League Soccer clash on Sunday.
The Argentina captain was taken off in the 73rd minute of the match against the Philadelphia Union after appearing to feel discomfort in the back of his left leg. However, he was seen walking normally as he left the pitch and headed down the tunnel.
Inter Miami head coach Guillermo Hoyos later suggested the substitution was a precautionary measure, pointing to the heavy pitch conditions caused by wet weather in Miami.
Hoyos explained that there was no immediate medical update but indicated that Messi was largely removed due to fatigue, stressing that the team preferred not to take any risks given the circumstances.
Messi, who has not yet officially confirmed his participation in the upcoming World Cup, is widely expected to feature in what would be a record-equalling sixth appearance at the tournament. The competition begins on June 11 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with Argentina set to open their campaign against Algeria on June 16.
Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has carefully managed his playing time while also dealing with occasional hamstring issues that have kept him out of action at various points.
