Leicester City faces potential points deduction amid Premier League financial probe

Posted : 22 March 2024

Leicester City faces the possibility of a points deduction following a referral by the Premier League to an independent commission on Thursday, concerning suspected violations of the league's profit and sustainability regulations. The Premier League disclosed that Leicester had neglected to furnish their audited financial accounts, specifying the assessment period ending Season 2022-23, during which the club was a Premier League member.

Should Leicester be found culpable, they could join Everton and Nottingham Forest as the third club to incur a points deduction for breaching spending regulations set forth by the Premier League. According to league regulations, clubs are mandated to maintain a cumulative loss of no more than £105 million ($133.6 million) over a span of three years.

Responding to the league's decision, Leicester expressed surprise and disappointment, particularly emphasizing their non-Premier League status at the time of the alleged breach. Despite their stance, the club affirmed its readiness to engage with the Premier League and the EFL to navigate through potential charges, while reserving the right to defend against any perceived undue intervention by football authorities.

Currently positioned second in the Championship, Leicester is locked in a tight race for promotion alongside league leaders Leeds United. However, any prospective points deduction resulting from the investigation would apply within the Championship, given the likelihood of the process extending beyond the current season. This development draws parallels with defending champions Manchester City's prior referral to an independent commission, highlighting the continued scrutiny faced by clubs regarding financial compliance within the footballing landscape.
