NBA icon LeBron James has written a rare op-ed in China’s People’s Daily, presenting basketball as a unifying force at a time of strained relations between Beijing and Washington. The Los Angeles Lakers star described the sport as “a bridge that connects us,” stressing its ability to foster friendship beyond competition.
The publication of James’ piece coincided with his visit to China ahead of two NBA preseason matchups in Macao next month between the Phoenix Suns and the Brooklyn Nets. His remarks arrive as U.S. and Chinese officials explore ways to ease tensions amid trade disputes, with tariff threats and negotiations dominating the political landscape.
The South China Morning Post noted the unusual nature of the article, pointing out that it is rare for China’s state-run media to feature foreign athletes in such a format. Typically, international sports stars interact with Chinese fans through digital platforms rather than official outlets.
James, who is preparing for his 23rd NBA season, expressed gratitude for the warm welcome he has consistently received in China. “It’s super humbling to be so far from home and feel this kind of love. I just wanted to give that energy back to the people and the country,” he said, as quoted by China’s state news agency Xinhua during his stop in Chengdu.
The NBA has been working to rebuild its reputation in China after a turbulent period that began in 2019, when then-Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey tweeted in support of Hong Kong protesters. The controversy led to a freeze in NBA broadcasts for over a year, with full coverage only resuming in 2022.
This year’s preseason games on October 10 and 12 mark an important step in restoring ties. The league has gradually regained popularity in China, bolstered by visits from superstars like Stephen Curry and De’Aaron Fox, who both drew massive crowds on recent tours.
For James, the message extends beyond basketball. His call for unity underscores the sport’s ability to serve as cultural diplomacy, bridging divides even in times of political uncertainty.
