Klaksvik win 1-2 against Molde in Champions League qualifying, preparing for Norway match

Posted : 09 August 2023
The enchanting journey shows no signs of stopping: Klaksvik secured a 1-2 victory against Molde in the first leg of their two-game series during the third qualifying round of the Champions League. This remarkable victory paves the way for the upcoming preliminary match in Norway next week, as the most surprising team in recent European football history continues its impressive run.

In Tuesday night's match, Magnus Ikram opened the scoring for the Norwegians (49th minute), but Ernie Frederiksberg's pair of goals (64th and 86th minutes) secured the sensational win for the relatively unknown team from the Faroe Islands. Klaksvik's journey has been filled with historic milestones, including their advancement to the third qualifying round and ensuring the presence of a Faroe Islands team in the European group stage for the first time ever.

However, Klaksvik faces an uphill battle in their quest to reach the Champions League group stage. Their chances are hindered not by Molde, but by potential opponents in the following rounds. A possible encounter with Turkish club Galatasaray, which recently achieved a 0-3 victory against Ljubljana, presents a formidable challenge.

Klaksvik's journey has captured hearts, particularly due to their victories against Ferencváros in the first round and a stunning upset against Swedish champions Hacken in the previous week. Their achievements, including two consecutive qualifying round victories, have left a lasting impression even on the seasoned observers of Faroe Islands football.

The coach of Klaksvik, Magna Hoseth, had a personal stake in the match, as he faced his former club Molde. Hoseth had previously played for Molde between 2006 and 2014, amassing 41 goals in 167 appearances. Now on the sidelines, he led Klaksvik to this remarkable victory.

Klaksvik, a local powerhouse in the Faroe Islands with 20 championships and 6 domestic cups, boasts notable figures such as top scorer Pal Calascard (with 14 goals this season) and Brazilian left-back Patrick da Silva, recognized as the club's most valuable player with a market value of €300,000 according to Transfer Market.
