Jurgen Klopp's New Role at Red Bull Sparks Controversy Among German Fans

Posted : 10 October 2024

Jurgen Klopp's recent appointment as the head of global soccer at Red Bull has sparked considerable controversy, leading to a decline in his reputation among fans in Germany. Set to begin his new role in January, Klopp will oversee all football-related operations for the Austrian energy drink company. This move has been met with significant backlash, particularly from supporters of Borussia Dortmund, where Klopp previously enjoyed immense popularity and success.

The criticism stems from Red Bull's contentious history in German football, particularly its acquisition of the fifth-division club SSV Markranstadt and its subsequent rebranding as RB Leipzig. This transformation, along with Red Bull's ownership of multiple clubs, including Red Bull Salzburg and New York Red Bulls, has painted the company as a corporate giant perceived to be exploiting the sport. Although Red Bull does not officially own RB Leipzig, it financially supports the club, further complicating the narrative surrounding its influence in football.

Under German Football Association (DFB) regulations, the '50+1' rule ensures that fans maintain a majority share in clubs, allowing them to impact crucial decisions. Critics argue that RB Leipzig has managed to bypass these regulations by restricting voting rights to only 17 members, most of whom have direct ties to Red Bull. This situation has earned RB Leipzig the reputation of being the "most hated club in Germany," with protests from rival fans highlighting the widespread discontent surrounding the club's perceived corporate nature.

Klopp's departure from Liverpool, where he cited burnout as his reason for leaving, has intensified the scrutiny surrounding his new role. Previously, Klopp criticized the multi-club ownership model, emphasizing the importance of tradition in football. Christian Falk from the German newspaper Bild noted that this decision has particularly unsettled Dortmund fans, who view RB Leipzig as a rival. The backlash on social media has been fierce, with some supporters feeling betrayed and accusing Klopp of hypocrisy for accepting a position with a club they consider a marketing tool, contrasting sharply with his past sentiments about football's traditions.
