Real Madrid and England midfielder Jude Bellingham is set to undergo shoulder surgery following the Club World Cup, a procedure that is likely to sideline him for at least the first six weeks of the upcoming season. The 21-year-old has been dealing with a recurring shoulder injury since 2023, which has forced him to wear protective strapping during matches for both club and country.
The operation is planned to take place after the expanded 32-team Club World Cup in the United States, scheduled from mid-June to mid-July.
Bellingham’s injury has already caused him to miss several games, including two each for Real Madrid and England at the end of 2023, after he suffered the injury in a match against Rayo Vallecano.
The surgery means he will miss the entire preseason and the early part of the new campaign, putting his availability for England’s World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia in September in doubt.
England manager Thomas Tuchel is expected to announce his squad soon for upcoming matches, and the status of players involved in the Club World Cup remains uncertain.
Despite his injury setbacks this season, Bellingham had a remarkable debut year at Real Madrid after his £115 million transfer from Borussia Dortmund. He played a crucial role in Madrid’s successes, helping the team to win both La Liga and the Champions League, contributing 23 goals in 43 appearances.
However, this season has been tougher, with Bellingham scoring 14 goals in 45 games as Madrid lost the league title to Barcelona and exited the Champions League in the quarter-finals against Arsenal.
