Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham expressed his discontent with a two-game suspension imposed by LaLiga, deeming it "a bit ridiculous" and attributing it to being new in the league, suggesting they want to "make an example" of him. The suspension follows a red card he received for protesting the referee's decision to whistle seconds before he scored a late winner in a 2-2 draw against Valencia.
While Bellingham provided an assist for Vinícius Júnior in Madrid's 1-1 draw with RB Leipzig in the Champions League, helping them progress 2-1 on aggregate, he won't play again until March 31 unless an appeal by the club proves successful.
Speaking after the match, Bellingham defended his actions, stating he did not use offensive language and acknowledged the need to take responsibility. He expressed acceptance of potential consequences, stating, "I think two games is a bit ridiculous, but if I have to miss those two games, I'll support the team from the stands."
The two-game suspension would sideline Bellingham for Madrid's LaLiga clashes against Celta Vigo on Sunday and Osasuna on March 16. The controversy arose when Bellingham scored in the 99th minute against Valencia, but the referee had already blown the final whistle, leading to the player's ejection for an "aggressive attitude" and repeated shouts of "it's a f---ing goal" in English. Despite Madrid's attempts to dispute the referee's assessment, the RFEF's disciplinary committee found insufficient evidence to overturn the decision.
Bellingham, who has contributed significantly with 16 goals in 22 league appearances this season, remains a key figure for Madrid. His recent Champions League assist adds to an impressive tally of four goals and four assists in six games in the competition.
