José Mourinho Reveals He Agreed to Replace Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in 2013

José Mourinho has revealed that he had reached an agreement to become Manchester United manager following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013, only to reverse his decision and return to Chelsea. The revelation comes in a new Netflix documentary about the Portuguese coach's career, which premieres on August 11.

Ferguson stepped down after 26 years at Old Trafford and 13 Premier League titles. Although David Moyes was eventually appointed as his successor, Ferguson confirmed in the documentary that Mourinho had been offered the position and initially appeared ready to accept it.

According to Ferguson, Mourinho changed his mind within hours after deciding that he could not turn down the opportunity to return to Chelsea. The Portuguese manager had already enjoyed tremendous success during his first spell at Stamford Bridge, winning back-to-back Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006.

Mourinho explained that Manchester United's stature made the offer particularly flattering, but his emotional connection with Chelsea ultimately influenced his decision. He felt he needed to return to a club where he had a strong sense of belonging after leaving Real Madrid.

The decision meant Mourinho returned to Chelsea in 2013, where he won another Premier League title and the League Cup during his second spell. Ferguson later admitted that he was disappointed by Mourinho's decision but understood the reasoning behind it.

Moyes' tenure at United lasted only 10 months before he was dismissed. Mourinho eventually got another opportunity at Old Trafford in 2016, replacing Louis van Gaal. He spent two and a half years in charge, winning the Europa League and League Cup before leaving the club in December 2018 following a poor run of results.

Mourinho's revelation is featured in Mourinho, a three-part Netflix documentary that explores his career and includes interviews with Ferguson and several other figures from his managerial journey.
