John Shittu, the former agent of Super Eagles icon John Obi Mikel, has firmly denied allegations made by former Nigeria U23 coach Samson Siasia, who claimed he was offered €50,000 to include Mikel in the 2008 Olympic squad.
Siasia recently alleged in an interview that Shittu made the offer after Mikel, who had missed the Olympic qualifiers, expressed interest in joining the squad for the Beijing Games. Siasia claimed he rejected the offer, arguing that it would be unfair to players who had helped Nigeria qualify.
In response, Shittu strongly refuted the accusation, describing it as baseless and damaging. Speaking to The Cable, he said, “I am one of the most respected agents in the game. I don’t engage myself with damaged or inconsequential people.” He also revealed that Siasia had privately apologized to him over the phone.
Shittu added that he considers the matter closed, saying, “As far as I am concerned, it’s a forgotten issue.”
John Obi Mikel was eventually omitted from the 2008 squad, which went on to win a silver medal in Beijing. He later captained Nigeria’s team to a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
As of now, neither Mikel nor the Nigeria Football Federation has publicly commented on the controversy.
