Borussia Dortmund secured a 2-1 victory over Monterrey in the last 16 of the Club World Cup, but the win came with a significant downside—Jobe Bellingham will be suspended for the quarter-final clash against Real Madrid, where he would have faced his older brother, Jude. The 19-year-old midfielder received a yellow card in the first half for a challenge on Nelson Deossa. Combined with an earlier booking in the group stage against Ulsan HD, the two cautions triggered an automatic one-match suspension under Club World Cup regulations.
Dortmund manager Niko Kovac admitted after the game that Bellingham was unaware the second yellow would result in a suspension. “He was very disappointed and surprised,” Kovac explained. “He’s young—his brother is also young—and I’m sure they’ll get the chance to face each other again, perhaps in the Champions League or in the future. Unfortunately, it won’t be at this tournament.”
Despite Bellingham’s early exit, Dortmund advanced thanks to two first-half goals from Serhou Guirassy, both assisted by Karim Adeyemi. Monterrey responded after the break with a goal from German Berterame and came close to equalizing when veteran defender Sergio Ramos narrowly missed a header. The match was briefly marred by discriminatory chants from Monterrey fans, prompting warnings from officials.
Kovac praised his team’s effort, saying, “We are happy—we overperformed. Advancing from the group stage was already a bonus, and now playing against the biggest club in the world is a great challenge. This is a big deal not just for Dortmund but for German football as well.”
Dortmund will face Real Madrid, who progressed to the quarter-finals by beating Juventus. The Spanish giants are now managed by former Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, whose Bundesliga success earned him the role. Kovac expects a familiar style of play from Madrid, stating, “We know Xabi Alonso well. He’s implementing what he did at Leverkusen, only now with world-class players. If we perform like we did today, we’ll give ourselves a good chance.”
As for Monterrey, the result means Sergio Ramos misses the opportunity to face his former club. Despite the loss, he expressed pride in his team’s fight. “We gave everything. Our fans saw that, and I think they are proud of how we represented the club,” Ramos told DAZN. “Now, we move forward.”
