Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono has been left devastated by the death of Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel following a collision between the two players during a Spanish second-division match. Owono’s team-mate Lautaro Spatz said the goalkeeper would never deliberately hurt anyone and was struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.
Spatz, who plays alongside Owono at Andorra, expressed his sympathy to De Miguel’s family and paid tribute to the Tenerife forward. He explained that the goalkeeper was suffering deeply and urged people to understand that the collision was an unfortunate sporting incident rather than an intentional act of violence.
The incident occurred in the closing moments of Monday’s match, which was level at 2-2. Owono rushed out of his penalty area to clear a long ball near the centre circle but collided with De Miguel, who was chasing the same ball. The Tenerife striker received medical attention on the pitch before being taken to hospital, while Owono was shown a red card and the match was abandoned.
De Miguel, 30, died on Tuesday after suffering a cardiac arrest following the collision. His death prompted an outpouring of tributes from clubs and players across Europe, with moments of silence observed at football matches during the week.
Owono, 25, has since deactivated his Instagram account after receiving abusive messages online. The Equatorial Guinea Football Federation has also expressed support for the goalkeeper, while Andorra confirmed it was offering psychological assistance to anyone at the club affected by the tragedy.
Spanish police have opened an investigation into De Miguel’s death, as required under Spanish law following a death from non-natural causes. The inquiry does not automatically mean that criminal charges will follow, with the chief prosecutor in Santa Cruz de Tenerife indicating that legal proceedings could be difficult because the collision occurred during normal play.
Tenerife has announced six days of official mourning, suspending club activities as players, staff and officials prepare to attend De Miguel’s funeral in Navahermosa, Toledo. The club will also open its stadium to supporters on Saturday so they can pay their final respects to the forward.
