Hull City Snap Up Nigeria’s Semi Ajayi in Key Defensive Boost

Posted : 20 June 2025

Hull City have confirmed the acquisition of Nigerian international defender Semi Ajayi on a two-year contract, with the option of a third, as they continue strengthening their squad ahead of the new Championship season.

The 31-year-old arrives as a free agent after parting ways with West Bromwich Albion, where he made over 170 appearances across six seasons. Ajayi played a crucial role in Albion’s promotion to the Premier League in 2020 and was a regular starter during their top-flight campaign.

Speaking after the announcement, Ajayi expressed excitement about joining Hull’s project.

“They sold me on the vision of the club and the plans for this season. I bring experience, leadership and pace to the defence and I’m ready to contribute,” he said.

Known for his composure on the ball, aerial dominance, and positional versatility, Ajayi also brings significant international experience, having earned close to 40 caps for Nigeria. He played every minute of the Super Eagles’ journey to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final.

Hull’s latest signing comes as part of a broader recruitment drive, which has already seen the arrivals of Reda Laalaoui, Dillon Phillips, and Colombian midfielder Gustavo Puerta. With ambitions to rise in the Championship table, Ajayi's signing signals the club’s intent to shore up its backline with proven quality.

Manager Sergej Jakirović is expected to rely on Ajayi’s experience and leadership as Hull aim for a stronger league campaign following last season’s mid-table finish.
