Headway calls for stronger concussion protocol in football after Maguire incident

Posted : 06 November 2023
The brain injury charity Headway has called for stronger action on concussion protocol in football after a concerning incident involving Manchester United defender Harry Maguire during a match against Fulham on Saturday.

Maguire displayed signs of discomfort following a collision with Fulham's Rodrigo Muniz. He was initially assessed by Manchester United's medical staff and allowed to continue playing. However, referee John Brooks called for another assessment when Maguire appeared dazed following a headed clearance later in the game.

Headway's chief executive, Luke Griggs, expressed concern about the incident, emphasizing the need to prioritize players' health over the outcome of a game. He highlighted the importance of following the "if in doubt, sit it out" principle, particularly at the elite level of football.

Griggs called for temporary concussion substitutions to be implemented, which would help improve the credibility of the concussion assessment process. He also stressed the urgency of changing the overall attitude toward player safety and concussion management.

It's worth noting that Manchester United is said to be supportive of their medical staff's actions, as Maguire was cleared through the concussion protocols for the first incident, while the second assessment was related to a hand injury rather than concussion.
