Posted : 23 January 2024

The Guinean Football Federation has issued a plea to fans to exercise caution in their celebrations following the Africa Cup of Nations match against Gambia, which ended in a 1-0 victory and left six people dead in post-game festivities.

The exuberant celebrations spilled onto the streets across Guinea as the win put coach Kaba Diawara's team on the verge of advancing to the knockout stages of the tournament in Ivory Coast. In response, the Federation released a video featuring the team, urging supporters to celebrate responsibly ahead of their crucial final group match against Senegal on Tuesday.

Amadou Makadji, the Federation's media manager, emphasized the importance of measured celebrations and the need to avoid putting lives at risk. He stated, "They have to be very careful to not put themselves in danger because the goal of football is to bring joy and not leave families bereaved."

Guinea's fate in the tournament hinges on the upcoming match, and a draw against Senegal could secure their place in the round of 16. The plea aims to prevent any further tragic incidents during the celebratory moments that football fans in Guinea cherish deeply.

Acknowledging the passionate football culture in Guinea, Makadji emphasized the unique connection people in the country have with the sport. He urged fans to celebrate responsibly, emphasizing the desire to avoid any unnecessary loss of life.

The Federation's appeal seeks to ensure that the joy of football is experienced without tragic consequences, underscoring the significance of responsible and safe celebrations in the wake of the team's achievements.
