Greek Super League match abandoned as player hit by firework in rivalry clash

The Greek Super League showdown between arch-rivals Olympiacos and Panathinaikos took a dramatic and unfortunate turn as the match was abandoned when Panathinaikos' Spanish defender, Juankar, was struck by a firework while warming up on the sideline.
This shocking incident occurred just five minutes into the second half, with the game tied at 1-1. The match, already notorious for its history of on and off-field violence, was initially halted as Juankar received necessary medical attention and was subsequently transported away on a medical cart.
In a grim reminder of past altercations during this fixture, both teams retreated to their respective changing rooms after Juankar's ordeal. Play remained suspended for approximately an hour before the decision to abandon the match was conveyed to the crowd at Olympiacos' Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium, coming more than three hours after the initial suspension.
The past has seen this fixture marred by violent incidents, with the game abandoned in 2019 when Panathinaikos fans attacked Olympiacos' team bench and clashed with police outside the OAKA Stadium, leading to Olympiacos being awarded the victory.
In the aftermath of this latest abandonment, Panathinaikos' official account posted that "the fate of the match will be decided in the courts," although no official decision regarding the match's outcome has been communicated by the Greek Football Federation at this time. This distressing incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges surrounding the safety and conduct of football matches in high-stakes rivalries.
