The Golden State Warriors have reportedly stopped making regular salary payments to centre Kristaps Porzingis, ruling that the absent player is no longer fulfilling his contractual responsibilities. The 31-year-old is due to earn $20 million this season, but his continued absence from the team has created uncertainty over his future in the NBA.
Porzingis has been away from the Warriors since before the start of training camp while dealing with an undisclosed health issue. Golden State initially expected him to return to the team facility and work with medical staff during his recovery, but he has not resumed regular contact with the organisation. His official status was subsequently changed to "not with team" rather than an excused absence.
The Latvian centre signed a two-year, $40 million contract extension with Golden State during the summer, although only $3 million of his salary for the second season is guaranteed. Despite withholding his payments, the Warriors have no immediate plans to void the agreement and are continuing to explore potential trade arrangements ahead of the February 11 deadline.
General manager Mike Dunleavy and the front office are reportedly considering how Porzingis’ contract could be used in a trade. Another team could take on his expiring salary to create future financial flexibility, potentially receiving a draft pick or another asset in return, depending on what Golden State is prepared to offer.
Porzingis is also believed to be considering the possibility of ending his professional basketball career after experiencing persistent health problems over the past two seasons. He previously disclosed that he had been diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), although it remains unclear whether the condition is responsible for his current absence.
The situation has created an increasingly difficult relationship between the player and the franchise, with Porzingis reportedly not challenging the decision to withhold his payments at this stage. The National Basketball Players Association is also not currently planning to dispute the matter on his behalf.
Meanwhile, Golden State have continued their campaign without the centre and have improved their results after a difficult opening. The Warriors have recorded five consecutive victories following three straight defeats to begin the season, as they attempt to remain competitive while resolving Porzingis’ situation.
