The President of Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA), Adekoyejo Adegbesan, on Thursday said that the body would foot the bill of best two Intermediate players from the forthcoming Engineer Toke Aka Jubilee National Championship in Abuja to PANASA President's Cup in Lagos.
The PANASA President, Adegbesan said this at the meeting with the Technical Director of Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), John Curtis.
Curtis explained that the best Intermediate player during the Masters category would get one of the sponsorships, while the winner of the Intermediate event of the Engineer Toke Aka Jubilee National Scrabble Championship would be rewarded with the second ticket to Lagos for the inaugural edition of the PANASA President's Cup in August.
The Organizing Committee of the Jubilee National Championship headed by Chukwudi Ehibudu, pegged the entry catchment points for the Masters category at 1300 points as against the usual cut off points of 1400 points in Nigeria.
This was done to encourage young talented players to rob shoulders with the super heavyweight in the game, thereby gaining the much-needed experience and exposure.
The one-day National Championship is a 12 rounds of games event, 1 random, 8 lagged and 3 King of the hill pairings with each player having 20 minutes per game and the 2021 Collins Scrabble Words dictionary will be the reference material.
To compete in the Masters event, a player must have 1,300 and above rating catchment points.
The Intermediate rating catchment is 1,299 rating points and below.
On the other hand, the Veterans event has no rating catchment requirement.
The Masters event participants will pay 8,000 naira only while players wishing to battle for honours in the Intermediate and Veterans categories are expected to register with 6,000 naira each.
The registration for the Jubilee Mini Retreat attracts a token fee of N3,000.
The Engineer Toke Aka Jubilee National Championship opens today June 15.
The sponsorship package by PANASA'S President, Adekoyejo Adegbesan fondly called Sheikh, for the best two Intermediate players from the Engineer Toke Aka Jubilee National Championship, is worth a princely sum of N5 million.
Special guests, players and officials are already in Abuja for the four-in-one event which is part of the activities to celebrate the President of Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), Engineer Toke Aka's birthday.
The event includes a Jubilee Mini Retreat today at the Zalika Garden the home of scrabble in Nigeria, Abuja, Inter denominational service and dinner tomorrow at the Hotel de Bentley in Utako-district, Abuja and the Jubilee National Championship, and poolside party on June 17 at Hotel de Bentley.
