Fulham and Malaga Involved in Bizarre Penalty Shootout Row

Fulham’s pre-season meeting with Malaga ended in extraordinary circumstances on Wednesday after the two teams drew 2-2 and became involved in a dispute over whether a penalty shootout should take place. The confusion escalated when Fulham’s players and coaching staff left the field while Malaga remained behind.

Malaga had forced the draw late in normal time when Fulham defender Calvin Bassey was penalised for handball. Eneko Jauregi converted the spot-kick to make it 2-2, setting up what the Spanish side expected to be a shootout for the Costa del Sol Trophy.

Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa was sent off after the final whistle following a confrontation with the referee. He then headed towards the dressing room alongside his players, who believed the match had finished without a shootout.

With Malaga still on the pitch expecting penalties, Jauregi stepped up and sent a symbolic spot-kick into an unguarded net before celebrating with his teammates and the home supporters at La Rosaleda.

Fulham later clarified that both clubs had agreed before the match that a shootout would not be held if the game ended level. Malaga, however, maintained in its post-match report that a penalty shootout had been scheduled, creating an unusual disagreement over the terms of the friendly.

Fulham will conclude their pre-season preparations against Stuttgart before beginning their 2026-27 Premier League campaign against Chelsea at Craven Cottage on August 24.
