French Open 2023: Novak Djokovic gets criticized for his remark on Kosovo
Posted : 31 May 2023
According to France's sports minister, Novak Djokovic's political statement on Kosovo at the French Open was "not appropriate" and "shouldn't happen again."
There has to be a "principle of neutrality for the field of play," according to Amelie Oudea-Castera.
Djokovic, Serb, wrote "Serbia's heart is in Kosovo. Stop the violence "on a lens of a camera.
It alludes to the ongoing unrest in Kosovo, which separated from Serbia in 2008.
"When you carry messages about defending human rights, messages that bring people together around universal values, a sportsperson is free to express them," Oudea-Castera defended.
"But in this case it was a message that is very activist, that is very political. You shouldn't get involved, especially in the current circumstances, and it shouldn't happen again."
Since ethnic Albanian mayors were installed in the country's north, there has been bloodshed, with police and NATO forces squaring off against Serb protestors. Serbia has never recognised Kosovo's independence.
