French Open 2023: British tennis's Emma Raducanu papered over flaws says Dan Evans
Posted : 27 May 2023
Along with Cameron Norrie and Jack Draper, Evans, the 24th seed, is one of just three British players in the French Open singles main events.
There are no British competitors in the women's singles due to Raducanu's injury.
"There's enough people playing junior tennis. We just don't help them in my opinion. It's a scarce draw, isn't it?" said the British men's number two.
Evans, 33, has long been an outspoken critic of British tennis' development and claimed that Raducanu becoming a major champion in 2021 was "fortunate" for the country.
When asked if Raducanu's victory in New York as a young qualifier "papered over cracks," Evans said, "Is that a rhetorical question? Yes.
"She's a very good tennis player but the rankings don't lie, do they?
"I don't want to sound like a broken record. But there is way further to go than just the top players. It's from the bottom up."
Four British players are among the top 60 men's players in the world, however Andy Murray will not be competing in Roland Garros with Norrie, Evans, and Draper because he wants to concentrate on the grass-court season.
Additionally absent from the clay-court Grand Slam is 20-year-old Raducanu, who had surgery on her wrists and ankle.
There are no British players in the top 100 in the women's rankings as a result of Raducanu's recent slide to position 106 in the globe.
