Francesco Farioli Resigns as Ajax Coach Following Title Race Disappointment

Posted : 19 May 2025

Francesco Farioli stepped down as head coach of Dutch powerhouse Ajax on Monday, just a day after the club’s painful loss in the Eredivisie title race. Ajax had once held a commanding nine-point lead with only five games left but faltered dramatically, losing twice and drawing twice, which allowed PSV Eindhoven to snatch the championship. The club’s technical director described Farioli’s departure as “incredibly disappointing,” emphasizing the unexpected nature of the decision.

In an official statement, Ajax confirmed that Farioli had informed the board of his choice to resign after careful consideration. While the 36-year-old Italian coach had revived Ajax’s fortunes since taking charge last May—when the team was struggling near relegation—he explained that differences in vision with the club’s management about how to reach their shared goals made parting ways the best option. Farioli acknowledged that although they shared the same ambitions, their perspectives on strategy and timelines diverged too greatly to continue together.

Alex Kroes, Ajax’s technical director, expressed his frustration over Farioli’s early exit, especially since the coach had signed a three-year deal after leaving Ligue 1 side Nice last year. Kroes praised Farioli and his staff for their valuable contributions throughout a demanding season, noting that the team had successfully secured qualification for next season’s Champions League. Despite the disappointment, Kroes acknowledged the positive moments achieved under Farioli’s leadership.

Kroes also highlighted the challenges Farioli’s sudden resignation presents for Ajax, especially with an already difficult summer transfer window ahead. He stressed the urgency of appointing a strong coaching team in time for the start of pre-season training scheduled for June 26. Farioli’s departure marks a significant moment, as he was the first non-Dutch coach at Ajax since Morten Olsen in 1998, and his absence will require careful management moving forward.
