Four Sentenced for Hate Crimes Against Real Madrid Star Vinicius Jr

Posted : 16 June 2025

Four men have been handed suspended jail sentences after being found guilty of committing a hate crime against Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr.

The group had hung an inflatable effigy of the Brazilian footballer from a bridge near Real Madrid’s training ground in January 2023, just before a Copa del Rey clash with Atletico Madrid.

Alongside the effigy, they displayed a banner reading “Madrid hates Real,” which was widely condemned as a racist and threatening act.

Three of the perpetrators were sentenced to 14 months in prison, while the fourth received a 22-month sentence due to distributing images of the incident online. However, the sentences were suspended after all four signed a letter of apology to Vinicius Jr, Real Madrid, La Liga, and the Spanish football federation.

In addition to the suspended sentences, the individuals were issued restraining orders preventing them from approaching the player or Real Madrid’s facilities and were banned from attending La Liga or Spain national team matches.

Real Madrid welcomed the court’s decision and highlighted that a total of 14 people have now been convicted for racist incidents involving their players. “This criminal conviction comes in addition to several already handed down in recent months,” the club said, referencing cases in stadiums across Spain, including Valladolid, Valencia, and Palma de Mallorca. The club reaffirmed its support for Vinicius Jr and emphasized its ongoing efforts to combat racism in football.

Vinicius Jr, who joined Real Madrid in 2018, has been subjected to repeated racial abuse during his time in Spain. The incident with the effigy followed previous racist chants directed at him by Atletico Madrid fans in September 2022 and again by Valladolid supporters later that month.

In December 2022, he publicly called on La Liga to take stronger action against racism, urging for stadium bans for offenders. The recent ruling marks another legal step in addressing these repeated offenses.
