Former RFEF President Luis Rubiales faces sexual assault charges, summoned to court

Posted : 12 September 2023
Former Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales is summoned to testify at Spain's National Court on charges of sexual assault and coercion. Prosecutors filed a lawsuit against Rubiales following his unsolicited kiss on Spain forward Jennifer Hermoso's lips after last month's Women's World Cup final. He faces coercion charges for pressuring Hermoso and her relatives to justify and approve what happened.

Rubiales resigned from his position as RFEF president and UEFA vice president. This came after his conduct marred Spain's World Cup final win against England and sparked investigations by FIFA, Spain's top sports court (TAD), and the National Court. In addition to the kiss on Hermoso, he was criticized for other inappropriate behavior.

Eighty-one current and former Spain women's team internationals announced they would not play for the national team under the current regime in protest against Rubiales.

Rubiales maintains that there was consent and his intentions were non-sexual. He apologizes for his actions but denies any sexual aggression.

Hermoso has pressed charges alongside Spanish prosecutors, stating that the kiss was not consensual.

Montse Tome, Jorge Vilda's former assistant, has been appointed as the interim RFEF president, replacing Spain's World Cup-winning coach. The 81 players who boycotted the national team are in dialogue with the RFEF to discuss their possible return.

The situation has led to significant upheaval in Spanish football, and Rubiales continues to fight to prove his innocence, despite his resignation, as Spain bids to co-host the 2030 Men's World Cup.
