SC Paderborn 07, a German 2. Bundesliga team, has officially announced the temporary acquisition of Kimberly Ezekwem, a 21-year-old footballer of Nigerian descent who previously played in Bayern Munich's youth team.
Ezekwem joined Freiburg U19s in 2018 and quickly climbed the ranks, establishing himself as a crucial player for their U23 side.
During the 2020-2021 season, Ezekwem played a pivotal role in the success of Freiburg's reserve team, contributing fourteen assists in thirty-seven appearances as they triumphed in the Regionalliga Südwest.
His impressive performances caught the attention of the Bundesliga, and he finally made his top-flight debut on May 6, 2023, when he came off the bench in the closing minutes of a narrow 1-0 defeat against RB Leipzig.
Having showcased his talent at the highest level, Ezekwem received four call-ups to the first team, all of which were for Bundesliga matches.
Benjamin Weber, the Managing Director Sport of Paderborn, expressed his enthusiasm for Ezekwem's signing, highlighting his exceptional footballing qualities and versatility.
Weber emphasized Ezekwem's ability to excel as a left-back in a back three or on the left wing, making him a perfect fit for their tactical system.
The addition of Ezekwem to the Paderborn squad marks the fifth new signing for the upcoming 2023-2024 season, joining the ranks of David Kinsombi, Mattes Hansen, Laurin Curda, and Antonio Grimaldi.
Paderborn's management is confident that Ezekwem's skills and potential will contribute significantly to the team's performance and ambitions in the upcoming campaign.
It is worth noting that Ezekwem's talent has been recognized beyond his club commitments.
He received a call-up to the Germany U20 national team in August 2021, highlighting his potential on an international level.
However, his participation was curtailed due to a muscle injury, preventing him from representing the national team at that time.
Nevertheless, Ezekwem's inclusion in the German setup demonstrates his growing reputation as a promising young player with immense potential.
