Football Fan Banned for Racist Post About Arsenal's Thomas Partey

Posted : 27 November 2024

A football fan, Charles Ogunmilade, has been banned from attending matches for three years after posting a racially offensive comment about Arsenal's Thomas Partey on social media. The incident occurred in April 2023 during Arsenal’s 3-3 draw with Southampton, where Partey, a Ghanaian international, missed a crucial shot.

Ogunmilade, who is Black, claimed the comment was meant as satire, imitating what a racist white person might say, but the post was reported to the police, prompting an investigation.

During the court proceedings in London, Ogunmilade explained that his comment was intended as sarcasm within a private group of friends and expressed that he was not a racist person. Despite his explanation, the court found the comment grossly offensive. Magistrate Shaoni Myer considered Ogunmilade's early guilty plea, lack of prior offenses, and personal experiences with racism before handing down the sentence.

In addition to the banning order, Ogunmilade must surrender his passport whenever the England men’s national team plays abroad. He was also fined £260 ($325) in total, covering penalties and legal costs. The case highlights the ongoing issue of racism in football and the consequences of harmful online behavior.
