United States striker Folarin Balogun has admitted he anticipated widespread debate after FIFA suspended his automatic one-match ban during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Monaco forward said he understood the unprecedented decision would attract criticism and admitted it created anxiety within the American squad ahead of their last-16 clash with Belgium.
Balogun was sent off for serious foul play during the United States' round-of-32 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina, a dismissal that would ordinarily result in an automatic suspension. However, FIFA's disciplinary committee chose to suspend the ban for one year, allowing the 25-year-old to remain eligible for the knockout match. The ruling drew heavy criticism, particularly after reports emerged that US President Donald Trump and White House officials had lobbied FIFA regarding the case.
Speaking to CBS, Balogun said he was delighted to return to the squad but quickly realised the decision would become a major talking point. He recalled sensing unease among his teammates because the situation was unlike anything they had previously experienced. Despite trying to block out the external attention, he acknowledged that the intense public scrutiny was difficult to ignore.
The striker praised his teammates for supporting him throughout the ordeal, saying they reassured him despite the circumstances being beyond his control. Balogun revealed he only learned he would be available for selection while travelling on the team bus, prompting an emotional reaction from players who celebrated the unexpected news.
Before FIFA's decision, Balogun had not been included in tactical preparations for the Belgium match because he expected to serve his suspension. Instead, he focused on encouraging teammates and maintaining morale during training. The sudden reversal left the squad surprised as they headed to practice.
The United States ultimately suffered a 4-1 defeat to Belgium, with Balogun unable to add to the three goals he had already scored during the tournament. However, he rejected suggestions that the controversy affected the team's performance, insisting the players remained fully focused on the challenge despite the surrounding attention.
Balogun said the squad quickly separated the emotional reaction from their professional responsibilities once the announcement was made. In his view, Belgium's quality on the pitch was the decisive factor, rather than any distraction caused by the disciplinary decision.
The controversy has continued beyond the tournament. UEFA described FIFA's decision to allow Balogun to play as unprecedented and impossible to justify, while questions over the disciplinary process remain unanswered. FIFA president Gianni Infantino has maintained that he does not influence disciplinary rulings, although the head of the disciplinary committee declined to explain how the decision was reached.
The debate intensified after England defender Jarell Quansah received a harsher punishment for a similar offence against Mexico. Quansah was handed a two-match suspension after being dismissed for serious foul play, highlighting the contrasting disciplinary outcomes that have fueled ongoing criticism of FIFA's consistency.
