Faruk Yusuf: Nigeria's rising handball star shining at Bulgaria 2023

Posted : 28 April 2023
The IHF Men's Emerging Nations Championship has proven to be a platform for young talents to showcase their skills and gain recognition.

In the previous editions of the tournament held in 2015, 2017, and 2019, promising players emerged onto the global handball scene.

In the current edition at Bulgaria 2023, a 19-year-old right back has captured attention and already established himself as a notable figure in world handball.

Faruk Yusuf, a key player for Nigeria, displays remarkable maturity and skill beyond his years, making him the country's best prospect for future success.

Nigeria has yet to achieve significant results in handball, with their best performance being a fourth-place finish at the CAHB African Men's Handball Championship in 1998.

However, with Yusuf leading the team, a new era of potential awaits.

At Bulgaria 2023, Yusuf has impressed with his scoring abilities, ranking second in the top goal scorer standings with 19 goals in just two matches, placing him right behind Andorra's Unai Ruiz after the group phase.

Additionally, Yusuf has contributed with four assists, directly influencing 23 of Nigeria's 54 goals in the competition.

Expressing his pride in representing Nigeria, Yusuf stated his determination to fulfill his duty with unwavering commitment and strength.

Yusuf's handball journey began at a young age, with him playing in his local town of Sokoto at the age of eight and even participating in an international tournament in Sweden.

By the time he turned 14, he was already training with the Nigerian senior national team, displaying exceptional talent beyond his years.

Making his debut at the age of 16, Yusuf quickly caught the attention of European clubs due to his remarkable physical attributes and outstanding handball instincts.

Now, at the age of 19, he is undoubtedly Nigeria's brightest talent and strives to lead by example, ticking all the boxes of what a true leader should embody.

In many ways, Yusuf epitomizes the potential of Nigerian handball and serves as a catalyst for the nation's progress in a sport that resonates with a population of over 200 million people.

Currently on loan from Barlinek Industria Kielce to Spanish side Fraikin BM. Granollers, Yusuf is not only a model for Nigerian handball but also a beacon of hope for the nation's handball aspirations.
