A football fan has been accused for wearing an offensive shirt at the FA Cup final that made reference to the 1989 Hillsborough Stadium tragedy, which claimed the lives of 97 Liverpool supporters.
An allegation of exhibiting threatening or abusive writing intended to annoy, alarm, or distress will bring James White, 33, of Warwickshire, before the court on June 19.
Following Saturday's encounter between Manchester City and Manchester United at Wembley Stadium, police posted a picture of a guy wearing a United shirt with the number 97 and the words "Not Enough" on the back.
The provocative clothing was discovered by the English Football Association (FA) on social media, and once security located the individual wearing it, he was arrested.
"We will not tolerate abuse relating to Hillsborough or any football tragedy at Wembley Stadium and we will continue to work with the authorities to ensure strong action is taken against perpetrators," the FA said in a statement.
Football stadiums continue to reverberate negatively about the Hillsborough incident and other tragedies in the game, a practice that the Premier League has denounced as "tragedy chanting."
