Former Premier League referee David Coote has been charged by the Football Association for inappropriate comments made about ex-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in a leaked video that surfaced on social media. The 42-year-old official was initially suspended in November 2024 after the footage showed him making derogatory remarks about Klopp and Liverpool, prompting a full investigation by the referees’ body, Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL).
Following the probe, Coote was dismissed by PGMOL in December 2024 for his conduct. The FA has now brought formal charges against him under rule E3.1, alleging that he acted in an improper manner and used abusive or insulting language. The charge further states that referencing Klopp’s nationality constituted an aggravated breach of the rule, potentially worsening the sanctions he could face if found guilty.
Although Coote was at one point accused of gambling-related misconduct after he was heard in the same video discussing the possibility of issuing a yellow card before a game, he has been cleared of those allegations. He had previously denied the gambling claims, calling them “false and defamatory,” and there was no evidence found to support a breach in that regard.
Coote, who hails from Nottinghamshire, has faced additional controversy in recent months. UEFA banned him from officiating European matches until June 2026 after a separate video surfaced showing him appearing to sniff a white powder while on duty at Euro 2024. In January, he publicly revealed he is gay and spoke about the challenges of hiding his sexuality due to fear of abuse. He also admitted to battling and overcoming a drug habit with the help of therapy.
