Former Nigeria international Dominic Iorfa has expressed disappointment with the Super Eagles for boycotting training ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoff semi-final against Gabon.
Iorfa, famously known as the “Speedstar” during his playing days, described the situation in the Eagles’ camp as “disgusting.” He recounted his experiences while playing in England for Queens Park Rangers (QPR), noting that European teammates were often surprised at the substantial match bonuses and incentives African players received for national team duty.
Calling on the players to set aside personal interests, Iorfa emphasized that their global recognition stems largely from representing Nigeria. He said: “The players refusing to train because of match bonuses or incentives is a disgusting thing to talk about. It surprises European countries when they hear how much African players get for playing for their countries. I remember my days at QPR in the early ’90s, with English internationals like Ray Wilkins, Kenny Sansom, David Seaman, Paul Parker, and Roy Wegerle from the USA. Yet, none of them ever refused to train over bonuses, despite their club earnings.”
Iorfa added that the national team is a platform that brings players into the global spotlight, noting that about 80 percent of Nigerian players might not have been known without it. “Many of Nigeria’s iconic players first gained prominence through impressive performances in the local league before moving abroad. This helped talented players become household names among local fans,” he concluded.
