Erik ten Hag responds to Carragher's criticism, acknowledges defensive lapses in Manchester United's defeat

Posted : 28 February 2024

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has responded to Jamie Carragher's critical analysis of the team's tactics in their recent 2-1 defeat against Fulham. Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, had questioned United's setup during the match, particularly highlighting their defensive vulnerabilities.

Ten Hag acknowledged that Carragher "had a point" but criticized the former Liverpool defender for consistently being subjective in his analysis. The manager pointed out that some analysts provide objective comments and useful advice, but Carragher's critique seemed to lack objectivity.

While admitting that Fulham exploited weaknesses in United's defense, especially during the first half-hour, Ten Hag expressed his displeasure with the team's defending, particularly on the left side. He attributed the defensive lapses to issues related to willingness, spirit, and passion. Despite finding solutions after the initial challenges, United ultimately fell to Fulham, with Alex Iwobi scoring a late winner.

Ten Hag acknowledged the team's unacceptable performance in managing the counter-attack that led to Fulham's late goal and emphasized the need for improvement. The manager recognized that footballers are not robots and can have off days but deemed the defensive lapses as unacceptable.

Looking ahead to the FA Cup fifth-round tie against Nottingham Forest, Ten Hag revealed that Harry Maguire would miss the match due to injury, and there were doubts about the fitness of Raphael Varane and captain Bruno Fernandes. The manager stressed the importance of doing better in the upcoming fixture.
