Manchester United's manager, Erik ten Hag, has stated that the club is making progress in their search for a striker.
However, they have ruled out making moves for Kylian Mbappe from Paris St-Germain and Harry Kane from Tottenham, both of whom have uncertain futures. Atalanta's Rasmus Hojlund remains a potential target, but United is hesitant to meet the Serie A club's £60m valuation.
Ten Hag expressed his desire to complete the striker signing as soon as possible to integrate the player into the team's style of play. United scored the fewest goals among the top six Premier League teams last season, and Ten Hag believes they are underperforming in this area.
Atalanta is said to have reached an agreement in principle with Almeria for Mali forward El Bilal Toure, which could pave the way for Hojlund's departure.
Hojlund joined Atalanta in 2022 and had an impressive season with 10 goals in 34 appearances. He has also been performing well for his national team, scoring six goals in six games during Euro 2024 qualifiers.
Jadon Sancho has been playing as a false nine in pre-season matches, and he scored in United's recent 2-0 victory over Arsenal. Anthony Martial is also returning from injury, which is seen as a positive development for the team.
However, Ten Hag hinted at an issue with Martial's attitude and emphasized the need for players to take responsibility.
United has already made some significant signings, bringing in goalkeeper Andre Onana from Inter Milan for £43.8m and midfielder Mason Mount from Chelsea for £55m. Despite these acquisitions, the club is still determined to find a suitable striker to bolster their attacking options.
