English clubs eye Europa League knockout phase in midweek matches

Posted : 29 November 2023

Liverpool, West Ham United, and Brighton are all poised to secure spots in the Europa League knockout phase this Thursday, a round ahead of schedule. Liverpool, despite a recent setback to Toulouse, only need to avoid defeat at home against LASK of Austria to progress.

They could also clinch the top spot in the group, ensuring direct advancement to the last 16. West Ham aims for qualification in Group A with a win against TSC Backa Topola, while Brighton faces AEK Athens in Group B for a chance to extend their European campaign into the new year.

Rangers, vying for a spot in the knockout phase, confront Aris Limassol at Ibrox in Group C. Brighton seeks revenge against AEK Athens after their previous defeat, while Liverpool eyes a bounce-back performance against LASK.

West Ham faces TSC Backa Topola, aiming to secure progression regardless of other group results. Meanwhile, Ajax faces a must-win situation against Marseille to avoid elimination from the competition. Rangers, under manager Philippe Clement, hope to capitalize on their impressive home record in the Europa League.

Marseille and last season's finalists, Roma, also have opportunities to qualify for the knockout phase. Ajax, despite a challenging season, seeks revival and needs a victory against Marseille to stay in contention. Rangers' captain, James Tavernier, emphasizes the importance of their upcoming match at Ibrox to secure a favorable position in the group. As the group stage approaches its climax, English clubs and others aim to navigate their way to the next stage of the Europa League.
