Ego clash escalates: Mbappe watches from stands as coach Enrique labels him 'worthless'

Posted : 02 March 2024

The ongoing clash of egos between Luis Enrique and Kylian Mbappe escalated during Friday's game, marking the third consecutive encounter since the striker reportedly conveyed his intention to leave Paris Saint-Germain at the season's end.

The latest episode unfolded in Monaco when, after being benched at halftime, Mbappe opted to watch the match from the stands alongside his mother and agent, Faiza Lamari. Before taking his seat, Mbappe engaged in what the French media termed a "circus," signing autographs, interacting with fans, and making phone calls in the stadium halls, all while sporting a seemingly cheerful demeanor.

Luis Enrique reiterated the same reasoning he provided after substituting Mbappe in the previous game against Rennes, emphasizing that the decision was solely coach-driven. The Spanish coach stated, "It's a 100% coach's decision. We'll have to get used to playing without him sooner or later. It's my decision, and I made it for the good of the team."

When pressed about potential issues between him and Mbappe, Luis Enrique maintained a professional stance, deflecting the question with, "I won't go into this game. I'm a professional. No problem, I manage the team the best way I can." He further expressed a preference for the team's second-half performance, asserting they played better without Mbappe.

Amidst the controversy, French journalist Bruno Salomon suggested that Mbappe's decision to relocate to the stands might have been advised by a Paris Saint-Germain official. Concurrently, another media outlet launched a scathing critique against the French champions' coach.

Daniel Riolo of RMC labeled the situation as "another circus show," condemning Luis Enrique as a "pretentious person without much value" and likening him to a "spiritual disciple of Guardiola who copies from him." Riolo's harsh assessment adds fuel to the intensifying drama between the coach and the star player.
