South Korea’s preparations for their crucial World Cup Group A encounter with Mexico were disrupted after a drone was reportedly spotted over their training session, head coach Hong Myung-bo confirmed on Wednesday. The incident occurred just days before the decisive clash in Guadalajara, which could play a major role in determining qualification for the knockout stage.
Hong described the situation as “unfortunate,” explaining that the drone was seen during a key training session but did not significantly interfere with tactical work as it appeared before the main practice began. However, he acknowledged that its timing, during an important phase of preparation, made the incident particularly concerning.
Reports from Korean media suggested the device was detected by a team security officer and later brought down using radio signals by a Mexican military drone-interdiction specialist stationed near the training site. It was also reported that two individuals believed to be operating the drone retrieved it and left the area. Mexican authorities have not issued an official statement, while local officials in Jalisco said they had no formal record of the event.
In response, the Korea Football Association has submitted a complaint to FIFA, requesting assurances that similar incidents will not occur again during the tournament. Drone flights are prohibited over World Cup-related venues and facilities in both Mexico and the United States due to security regulations.
On the sporting side, Hong stressed that his team is fully focused on the challenge ahead. He praised Mexico’s creative midfield and acknowledged the difficulty of playing against the host nation in front of a passionate home crowd. However, he insisted his players have experience in high-pressure environments and must remain composed to control the match’s rhythm.
Mexico enter the fixture in strong form after a 2-0 win over South Africa in their opening match, while South Korea also began their campaign positively with a 2-1 comeback victory over Czechia. A win for either side on Thursday would put them in a commanding position to reach the knockout rounds.
